About Zygoma (Cheekbone) Fracture

The cheekbone and its place in the face.

The zygoma gives the cheek its prominence and forms part of the eye socket. After a fracture, the cheek may look flattened once the swelling settles, and there may be numbness of the cheek and upper lip, difficulty opening the mouth, or changes in vision.

A displaced fracture is usually lifted back into position and fixed with small plates, ideally within the first one to two weeks, before the bone begins to set. A fracture that has not moved may only need to be watched.
