About Mandible Fracture

Why a broken jaw changes the bite.

The lower jaw is one of the most commonly broken bones of the face, often after road accidents, falls, or assaults. Pain on biting, teeth that no longer meet, numbness of the lower lip, or difficulty opening the mouth all suggest a fracture.

Many fractures are repaired with small titanium plates placed through the mouth, which restores the bite and lets the jaw move sooner. Some fractures can be managed without an operation. Soft food and careful mouth hygiene are part of healing.
