About Emergency Tracheostomy

Securing the airway when it is blocked.

A tracheostomy is an opening made in the front of the neck into the windpipe, so that air can reach the lungs directly. In an emergency, it is used when swelling, a tumour, an injury, or a severe infection blocks the upper airway.

Many tracheostomies are temporary and are closed once the swelling or obstruction has settled. Before going home, patients and families are shown how to care for the tube, and follow-up is arranged with the treating team.
