About Jaw Cancer

When cancer reaches the bone.

Cancer can involve the jaw by spreading from the gum or the floor of the mouth, or less often by starting within the bone itself. Loosening teeth, numbness of the lip or chin, swelling, or a denture that no longer fits can all be early signs.

Scans show how far the bone is involved. If part of the jaw needs to be removed, reconstruction — often with bone taken from the lower leg — is planned at the same time, so that chewing, the bite, and the shape of the face can be restored.
